Why buy local flowers?

We are fans of the Slow Flower movement. That means local flowers grown using sustainable practices that travel only short distances from field to vase. Locally grown flowers often smell better and last longer when properly based (plus there’s the singular thrill of driving past the flower farm and seeing all that beauty waving in the breeze). There’s the added benefit of stimulating the local economy as well as your senses.

Many folks don’t know that over 80% of flowers sold in the United States are international imports from as far away as Colombia and Ethiopia. The negative impacts of the imported flower trade are wide ranging and too often ignored, including the environmental impact of herbicides and pesticides, the carbon footprint of shipping and storing the flowers, and the reports of human rights abuses within the industry.

At the Flower Girl, we are committed to using sustainable practices that promote beauty, health, and vitality within our community: using a “people first” mentality when making business choices, keeping our pest control aligned with organic standards, and continually working to create beauty in the lives of others.
